the acting studio at asbury park high school

This project, brings together high school students with a local theatre professional to explore theatre through improvisation, acting techniques, movement, and script development. Students are offered a unique chance to create and perform their own theatre production.

The 2006-2007 schoolyear featured the acting studio's debut performance at the APHS's spring concert. 2007-2008 begins with a Holiday play at their winter concert, and ends with a full theatrical production in the spring.

photo literacy project

This 20 week program is a partnership with Bradley Elementary School, local photographer John Meyerhofer, and artscap. A local artist teaches basic photography concepts, terms and techniques to 2nd and 4th grade elementary school students. Every week, the students are given a camera to take home and document their communities, homes and world. They then write stories about the world they captured in their photographs. This sharpens their writing skills in an engaging and meaningful way—addressing, grammar, vocabulary, and content generation. At the end of the project, the students’ stories and pictures are gathered and bound into a book. A copy of the book is given to the school library and the work is exhibited in a local art gallery, so that the students are publicly recognized as artists and authors.
